Unify Credit Union

Meet the team: Emily and Ajheen

Find out how our team has adapted to the challenges us and our members have faced due to the pandemic

Since the pandemic hit, our staff have been working hard to keep Unify Credit Union services running and to support our members during this challenging time to keep control of their money matters with affordable loans and easy ways to save. Here, we hear how Member Service Assistant, Emily Fishwick, and Credit Control Officer, Ajheen Jaf, have found the past year.

Emily Fishwick

How has your role been affected by the pandemic?

Since the pandemic began, most of the staff have been transferred to work at the Wigan office. We are working reduced shifts to make the office a safer place to be, ensuring social distancing is in place at all times.  I only started my job at Unify Credit Union in January 2020 so, for the most part, my service here has been working within the pandemic.

How has Unify adapted to support members during this time?

We have new procedures in place for the completion and signing of loan forms; for example, most members are applying for loans online and signing their loan form electronically via email.  If any member is struggling with the completion of a loan form online, we can call them to talk them through the procedure. If they are not up to date with recent technology, we can send them a loan form in the post to ensure they aren't missing out on the opportunity for a loan.  We have all had to adapt to new ways of completing the usual tasks, ensuring all members, especially the vulnerable, still have access to their money even though the branches are closed.

Have you learned anything about members, the Unify team, or yourself during this challenging time?

I've learned that staff and members of Unify Credit Union are very adaptable to change. A lot of members prefer using the online service to apply for loans and request withdrawals.

What advice would you give to members to manage their money in 2021?

I would advise members to continue saving during the pandemic and to call us if they are struggling with anything financially. I would also offer them advice on ways to save and cut down on day-to-day outgoings.  I would recommend that members sign up for a free credit report rating so they can keep an eye on their borrowing power.

Here, we hear how Credit Control Officer, Ajheen Jaf, has found the past year.

How has your role been affected by the pandemic?

We have been helping those members who are struggling financially due to the pandemic by offering payment plans/payment holidays.

How has Unify adapted to support members during this time?

We had to change our usual working hours to make sure we are able to serve our members as normally as possible.

Have you learned anything about members, the Unify team or yourself during this challenging time?

We all had to learn how to cope with the new way of working and get through this challenging time together, and try to continue as normal as possible.

What advice would you give to members to manage their money in 2021?

Make a budget and try to save if you can, and avoid getting loans from other high rates interest lenders.
